Beam.NG Drive Skins

Date

May 2021

Program

Illustrator, Photoshop

This was a project for my Design III class at Dixie State University. I was working on my senior project at the time, which involved creating multiple graphics kits for a motorcycle, but I still had an itch to make more liveries for vehicles, as it was very fun to take 2D designs and transfer them to a 3D space. Doing this in a game allowed me to expand my ideas to something larger, and what is larger than a monster truck?

For this project I used a game called Beam.NG Drive. The base vehicles I used for this were from Beam-Monsters.com, this community also has blank templates for all of the different styles of bodies they use for the trucks, which was very helpful.

To create the skins, I took the templates into Adobe Illustrator and created all of the art for each of the trucks. Once done with the art, I took the skin into Photoshop to add shading and texture to them. After a small amount of basic coding, the skins were in game! Along with the digital product, I wanted to create something physical to go with this. I created some stickers in the same style as you would see at a real event and printed out a few dozen.

I am very pleased with how this project turned out. The game has received dozens of updates to improve things such as the graphics and performance since these were made, so I some point I would like to go back and update them and create more for different vehicles.
