Neon Playing Cards

Date

February 2021

Program

Illustrator, Photoshop

This was a project for my Design III class at Dixie State University. For this project we were given a simple task: Design some cool playing cards. Out of all of the projects I created during this time, I am most pleased with this one.

The design for the cards was made entirely in Adobe Illustrator. For my design I wanted to base the cards off of neon signs/lights, so I studied them, as well as other pieces of design that tried to capture the same thing I was looking for. I used a black background to really make the other elements of the card pop. If you look at the design of the cards, you will notice that there is at least one break in the lines that create the shapes and icons for the cards. This was done in order to mimic the style that real neon signs have. After I had the basic layout down for how I wanted to card to look, I then went on to add the specific details to fit each suit. Once I had all of the elements down, I added some effects to make the glow more noticeable. I noticed the ace cards were looking a little bare, so I added a simple horizontal pattern of lights in the background for all of them to give them a little more life.

Once I completed with the design of the cards, mockups were made using Photoshop in order to give a better picture to what these would look like if manufactured. I am in love with these cards. I think they turned out exceptionally well, and I am really proud of the work I did for this project.
