Sawtooth Cola

Date

April 2021

Program

Illustrator, Photoshop

This was a project for my Package Design class in college. We were tasked with making an original design theme for a fictional soda company. The retro outdoors style we see everywhere today was really coming up during this time, so I wanted to take that style as inspiration for this project as I feel it fit with the old school glass bottles we were given to work with.

The Sawtooth Mountains are a mountain range in Idaho, the name popped into my head when brainstorming and I had to use it, because I mean it just sounds so cool. I started looking at images of the Sawtooth's to see if I could utilize the actual mountains in anyway, and fortunately I could. I traced a simplified jagged outline of one of the peaks in the mountain range to use as my main icon for the packaging and brand. To tie this in with the rest of the packaging I added a subtle jagged line pattern on the handle of the box and label.

I really like the colors I chose for this. When I think of the feel I was going for in this project colors like cream, navy blue, and various shades of brown and orange come to mind. I eventually ended up with the three colors you see throughout this project. To tie it all together I chose a classic style font for the main typography, and a rounded sans serif font for the additional text around the packaging. To finish the project, we were given a photoshop template to import our art into. This was used to produce the images you see presented here.

I am a big fan of the look and feel I achieved with this project. It was exactly what I was going for and it received a great reaction when I presented it. I really enjoy this style of design, and I think that shows with this project.
